Bondfield House

Margaret Grace BONDFIELD (1873 – 1953) was inspirational as Britain’s first female cabinet member and first female Privy Councillor. As a member of the Labour Party, Bondfield gave a voice to women’s and working people’s rights. Born in Chard, she left at the age of 14 to start work in a drapery and embroidery shop 150 miles from home. Her experience of overcrowded and insanitary conditions and insufficient food inspired her to fight for the rights of working people who did not have a voice.
