Academic Mentoring Programme

Academic Mentoring Programme

How Academic Mentoring works at Holyrood

Academic Mentoring is a nationally recognised scheme to help students to be the best that they can be. During the crucial period in Year 11 in the run up to exams we want to ensure that we help students to overcome any barriers to learning and put in place the intervention strategies necessary to ensure that they gain the very best GCSE results that they are capable of. In order to achieve this…

we will…
  • assign all students a mentor – someone who will take an in-depth interest in their mentees’ progress and achievement across all of their subjects.
  • put in place a programme of support sessions to enable students to catch up and close any gaps between where they are now and where they need to be by the time of their exams.
  • try to help students to overcome any barriers to learning by putting in place any other strategies that may be necessary.
  • challenge students when they are not achieving as they should.
  • praise students when they are doing the right things and working independently.
  • encourage students to set high expectations and challenging targets for themselves.
  • be relentless in following up so that no one slips through the net.
  • communicate with parents or carers about students’ progress.
  • focus on students’ futures to demonstrate how the choices they make now will affect them in the long term.
students must…
  • be organised and turn up to their mentoring meetings on time.
  • come to their meetings with a positive attitude and accept the help available.
  • keep their mentors informed of any issues that affect their ability to meet the expectations that we have for them.
  • attend subject sessions as scheduled and work hard in them to take advantage of the directed support.
