Holyrood Academy's Music Department has an inspirational extra-curricular programme for our students to participate in. Mrs Spiller and Mrs Seib are committed to providing opportunities for students to develop their musical abilities and to showcase their talents including with the new addition of music technology and ‘Bandlab’ into the Schemes of work in all Key stages.
With a whole school choir involving students from all year groups, they sing a large range of popular, classical and musical theatre numbers ready for a variety of events such as school concerts and supporting outside performances such as ‘Ernie’s Journey’ last year. They are eagerly awaiting the first post-covid carol service in December at St Mary’s church. In the past students have entertained parents and the community locally, nationally and internationally on their music tours to destinations such as France, Ireland and The Netherlands. Mr Shortland, our resident Guitar teacher, runs Rock School on a Friday with students from all year groups performing group numbers such as ‘Living on a Prayer’ and ‘Blinded by the lights’ and students in Years 7-10 have now formed their own rock bands during break out group work.
For the first time ever in Holyrood Academy history, the whole of Year 7 have been testing their vocal skills with the whole year group choir in the upper site hall singing their rendition of ‘We Will Rock you’ and ‘One Way or Another / Hit me with your Best shot’ mashup.
Instrumental tuition at Holyrood is provided by dedicated music teachers. Individual lessons are currently available on brass, strings, woodwind, piano, drums, vocals, ukulele and guitar.
