GCSE Options for Years 10 & 11 Courses
Year 9 Options Evening is an important stage in your son/daughter’s school career as it is the first opportunity they have had to influence the curriculum they will follow. Please carefully review the videos below with them.
All Holyrood students study the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, as well as core PE and Personal Development Programme. In addition all students will study History or Georgraphy and at least two free choice option subjects. The number of free choice option subjects will depend on the science qualification offered to your child.
The English Baccalaureate
The English Baccalaureate is not a qualification in itself, but rather a collection of GCSE passes at Grade 5 or better in specified subjects. This is an indicator of academic success at Key Stage 4 and may be one of the requirements for entry to some post-16 courses, training and employment, and for some university admissions in the future.
We are therefore strongly recommending that those students who are capable of gaining the English Baccalaureate include the subjects below in their choices at Key Stage 4. To be awarded the English Baccalaureate a student at Holyrood will need to achieve at least a Grade 5 at GCSE in each of the following:
History or Geography
French or German and
NB Computer Science is also considered to be a Science subject.
Once you and your child have had a chance to view all the information please complete the Options form which was emailed to parents on Friday 18th February 2022. Due to weather conditions, there is a slight delay in uploading the video. We hope to have it uploaded as soon as possible.
The deadline for the completion of this is Friday 11th March 2022 at 11am.
Please see below the recording of the Online Year 9 Option Evening Video, held on Thursday 17th February 2022 where staff explain in more detail the options process.
Below our staff talk about what is included in the option subjects that can be studied in Years 10 and 11.
