GCSE Options for Years 10 & 11 Courses
Year 9 Options Evening is an important stage in your son/daughter’s school career as it is the first opportunity they have had to influence the curriculum they will follow. Please carefully review the presentations and videos below with them.

Core Subjects
All Holyrood students study the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, as well as core PE and PDP. All students will study Triple Science (3 GCSEs) instead of Combined Science (2 GCSEs), plus a humanity and two free choice option subjects. This move to Triple Science is part of our COVID recovery strategy and we believe that the high quality teaching in place in our science department will really benefit all students. We also believe that a focussed approach by a subject already being studied is a more rational way to address the learning time missed by students than spreading their efforts too thinly across too many subject areas.

The English Baccalaureate
The English Baccalaureate is not a qualification in itself, but rather a collection of GCSE passes at Grade 5 or better in specified subjects. This is an indicator of academic success at Key Stage 4 and may be one of the requirements for entry to some post-16 courses, training and employment, and for some university admissions in the future.

We are therefore strongly recommending that those students who are capable of gaining the English Baccalaureate include the subjects below in their choices at Key Stage 4. To be awarded the English Baccalaureate a student at Holyrood will need to achieve at least a Grade 5 at GCSE in each of the following:

History or Geography
French or German
NB Computer Science is also considered to be a Science subject.
