Holyrood Academy attracted over 20 delegates when on 3rd July, it hosted the Food Teachers South West ‘Investigate Food Somerset’ event. The 1-day course has been designed for teachers to explore how best to deliver food science knowledge and high-level practical skills in the new Food and Nutrition GCSE.
Teachers learnt about food biochemistry theory such as gelatinization and the Maillard reaction and how to apply this in the food room with fun, interactive practical sessions. The inspiring demonstrations were led by Simon Gray, Senior Associate at The Food Teachers Centre whose workshops used balloons and plastic water bottles to explain on the role of yeast in bread as well as how to make ice cream using a fire extinguisher! Other more familiar methods were also practised, namely making fresh pasta and choux pastry.
Mrs Eloise Packer said, “It was a fantastic day and we all definitely learnt something new! The Food Teachers Centre put on some truly inspiring demonstrations and we now feel eager and ready to start teaching the new course in September.”
