Holyrood Academy’s U15 Girls rugby team competed at the South West Regional Finals at the RFU 3G surface in Weston-Super-Mare on 29th March 2017. Having swept all before them at the County event a few weeks earlier, the squad went into the tournament high on confidence.
The format of the tournament divided the 10 qualifiers from Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Dorset & Wiltshire into 2 pools of 5 teams. The Holyrood girls once again blew away the best schools from Devon, Cornwall and Gloucestershire winning their games 6-0, 9-0, 7-0 and 3-1. They then beat a very good Redruth school team 6-0 in the semi-final. This meant a nail-biting final against last year’s National Champions from Kings of Wessex.
Having led the match 1 try to nil for the majority of the game, 2 late tries sealed the game for the Cheddar school, the second with the last play of the game. Head of Holyrood Rugby, Simon Jenkins, said “To push the National champions so close in the final is testament to how talented a group of girls we have. This puts us up there as not only the best in the south west but nationally as well. Our major advantage is that the majority of the team actually U14s so will get another shot at the title next season. Together with some great U13s coming through the ranks, we will only keep getting stronger.”
