Holyrood's Year 10 Rounders team got off to a flier after beating Gryphon School in their first league match of the season last week. Despite the miserable weather the game went ahead at Holyrood with the girls keen to get a good start to the season after reaching the County Finals the year before. Gryphon won the toss and put Holyrood into bat where the girls struggled to keep the ball on the ground which resulted in quick catches putting the home side under pressure. The girls only managed to reach 4 1/2 rounders from their first innings so they knew they had to field well. Despite some strong bowling from captain Ellie Hull, a few mistakes in the deep saw Gryphon end on 5 rounders after their first innings. After a quick pep talk at half time the girls knew they had to pull out all of the stops and hit big. Some excellent striking from the likes of Jess Withers, Cerys Llewellyn, Martha Cosgrove, Amy Hart and Lisa Owen saw Holyrood end on a strong total of 11 1/2 rounders. In the final innings of the game the home side began to put on the pressure with some superb fielding. Edith Evans had a fantastic catch behind 3rd post and Lisa Owen (Back Stop) and Jess Withers (2nd Post) worked well to prevent Gryphon from scoring. Gryphon finished on 8 1/2 rounders, which saw Holyrood win their first game comfortably!
Players of the game were Amy Hart & Martha Cosgrove. Miss Sims, Sports Coach at Holyrood Academy said, "The girls were apprehensive at the beginning as they were missing a couple of key players but I'm pleased with how they've started the season. We're looking forward to the next game against King Arthurs where we hope to build on today's work."
