After some hard work and great performances in the group games the Y7 girls hockey team found themselves travelling to Millfield on Tuesday 11th December for the County hockey finals. The Year 7s had a perfect start in their group games beating Bishop Foxes 1-0, The Blue School 3-0 and Chilton Trinity 8-0 (with Matilda Clayton scoring a hat-trick!). This meant they then faced Sexeys in the final which they knew would be a tough game. The Holyrood side went 1-0 down in the first half but after a quick half-time pep talk the girls knew they had the potential to win if they worked hard. Millie Stoneman quickly scored in the second half to level the scores and in a matter of minutes the girls were 3-1 up with momentum going Holyrood's way. Some brilliant defending from Laura Miller, Holly Griffiths and Charlotte Lamb prevented Sexeys from making it 3-2 before Phoebe Grinter took the ball down the wing and set up Grace Farmer on the back post to make it 4-1. The girls went wild at the full-time whistle and were deservedly named County Champions at the final presentation.
Shannon Preston, Sports Coach at Holyrood Academy, said: "Wow, I think this is one of the best days I've had since I've been at Holyrood. All the girls have worked tremendously hard since September and it has really paid off. To win the competition with not one but two year groups is an amazing achievement. Their work effort, determination and resilience has been second to none. They have certainly done the Academy proud!"
